Jon Duncan Junior Deeside Cup 2012

The Jon Duncan Junior Deeside Cup is named after an honorary GRAMP and ex-British Team member, Jon Duncan, who is now enjoying semi-retirement from the international orienteering scene growing beetroot in Norway. (Honest!)

Here are the rules and 2012 (JD)2C events. Any questions? Contact Trevor Ricketts of MAROC or Iain Barraclough of GRAMP or ask at an event.

We’ll be posting the (JD)2C rankings here as the year progresses and, as you’re automatically entered into the competition if you’re a GRAMP or MAROC Junior, all you need do now is make sure you get along to as many events as you can this year. Good Luck!

Sun 26/2/12 Bogendriep Level C Colour Coded

Our first “big” event of the year and it’s a GRAMP CHAMPS and (JD)2C counter so come and get some points chalked up. This was supposed to have been a second stab at running the event at Scolty which was cancelled due to snow last year, but felling plans have scuppered it this year instead! So, we’ve borrowed Bogendriep for the day and will be using a bit of the area you don’t often get to see (for the longer courses anyway).

Parking will be on forest tracks – turn off the B974 just before you get to Bridge of Bogendriep. Map

Assembly is adjacent to the parking; the Start is 900m from Assembly along the parking track so runners please be aware of traffic and vice versa; the Finish is 100m from Assembly/Download.

7 colour coded courses:
White 1.6km 20m climb
Yellow 2.2km 25m
Orange 3km 105m
Light Green 3.2km 105m
Green 4km 175m
Blue 5.9km 245m
Brown 7.4km 360m

Reg: 10:30 – 12:30
Starts 11:00 – 13:00
Courses close 14:30 ish
£5 Seniors £2.50 Juniors/Students.

We’ll be operating the Early Email Entry system up until midnight Friday 24th – tell us if you intend coming and we’ll reserve you a map until 12:00 on the day. No need to fill in a stub at reg, just go to the EEE registration point to pay and collect your brikke.

The Bogendriep courses are complete and files gone off to the printers, my preparations are well advanced.

Before going any further, I must make clear that this event is only going ahead thanks to Maroc. Firstly for ‘lending’ us Bogendreip at the last minute, which means we can offer an event close by the previous evening’s Scottish Night Championships, and secondly big thanks must go to Alastair Marshall who has leapt into the breach as Controller.

It’s been a bit of a rush job, so despite a lot of work, I’d describe these courses as (to use the current argot) ‘vanilla’, i.e. the basic version; they (hopefully) technically tick all the boxes but they are not the most imaginative I’ve ever managed, so apologies for those of you out there with very high planning standards (you know who you are!).

The Early Entry list is looking pretty slim at present, get your entries in using the EEE form so that we can make sure you all get a map. The forecast is looking good for next weekend and forest is lovely and runnable at this time of the year, so here’s hoping we get a big entry to make the last few weeks’ scrabbling around worthwhile!

CompassSport Cup 2012 Report

Team GRAMP came third in the CompassSport Cup competition today, 59 points behind arch rivals (and friends) MAROC who in turn lost to ESOC by a mere 11 points. Congratulations to ESOC who now go through to the final in September.

Thanks to everyone who heeded the clarion call and turned out for the club, especially Foss and Erik who got up at 5:30 this morning for the 284-mile round trip!

Well done to Felix Späth, a very recent new member, and Sasha for gaining the maximum points for their respective classes and all the other GRAMPs who backed them up (a full list and course results etc is available here) not least Keith Yardley and Lachlan Kirk who kept their heads and put in solid performances against the MAROC M14- runners. Some of us plodded too slowly to make a mark, others blew up mid-course, some picked up the wrong map and some just couldn’t make it on the day but even taking all that into account I still don’t think we could have matched ESOC’s performance had everything gone according to plan.

Thanks also to Evgueni for chauffering the minibus and accomodating Pete’s demands for a later departure so he could have a few more minutes in bed (Foss and Erik were not impressed by such lack of moral fibre) and also to the Gomersalls for providing top notch tea/cake/blethering venue after the event.

UPDATE: Entry lists can be viewed via Oentries. Start times have been allocated to runners on Courses 1,2 and 3 and these can be found on Oentries too.

Start process: -3 minute call up for courses 1,2,3; Courses 4,5,6 have relatively few runners and can start more or less at will between 18:30 and 19:00 by walking up the relevant start lane to fill the empty slots and start on any available minute, as directed by the start officials.

Glen Dye lies southwest of Banchory, Aberdeenshire. Parking will be on forest tracks at GR NO659905. Start and Finish nearby.

Emit timing.

Starts 6-7pm, courses close 7:30-8pm depending on weather/area/organiser. Seniors £4, Juniors/Students £2.50.
