Balmedie Sun 11th Dec 2022

Weather: We’ve noticed the Met Office has extended the Yellow warning into Sunday so will be checking conditions at Balmedie and make a decision soon on whether to go ahead or postpone. Please check here before travelling on Sunday.

Although the dunes themselves will be fine the approach road, car park and board walks may have some residual ice so ca’ canny.

Grampian Orienteers are pleased to stage a Colour Coded event at Balmedie. (Apologies to those who were looking forward the Short Green course as previously advertised as that’s not now going to be available.)

CAKE!! 50 Years after Gramp was recognised by the SOA as an orienteering club in its own right, we’ll be celebrating with cake! It would be great to have at least 50 members at Balmedie (we’ll count ex-members too!) and there will be spot prizes for some lucky competitors. Come and join in the celebrations.

How to enter:
You can turn up on the day and hope we’ve enough maps left for your preferred course or you can use our Early Email Entry system which guarantees a map. In either case payment is made on the day.
Gramp’s EEE entry system is quite simple:  you send an email to with ‘Balmedie EEE’ somewhere in the title line.  Include person/people to enter along with age group, club, colour of course required and SI details (if not an SI owner then flag that too).  No need to pay until the day at the event and you can swap courses if maps still available.
N.B. EEE closes at midnight on Friday 9th (bit earlier than usual as we have our AGM on Sat evening.)

And don’t forget to report back even if you retire.

Terrain: Fast open sand dune terrain.  Many paths of varying permanence.

Warnings to competitors:  Please be aware of weather conditions on the day and dress appropriately for the time of year.  Trip hazards are prevalent in places in the form of rabbit holes on tracks and slippery duckboards and there are some very steep and loose sandy slopes on the seaward side probably best avoided.
Balmedie is popular with dog walkers and often these will not be on a lead.
If you think you may have Covid please give this one a miss.
