You’ll need a mountain bike and helmet for this one! It’s intended as a warm-up for the Masters MTBO event in Moray Tuesday 8th September to Saturday 12th September (closing date 8th August) World Masters MTBO Championships 2026 – The World Masters Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships are taking place in Moray, Scotland in 2026
If you just fancy having a go at something similar but different (?!) then you’re more than welcome to come along – entry on the day.
A special map has been prepared showing the rideability of the different tracks and the challenge is route choice – deciding the best route for your cycling ability and navigating whilst riding..
The map is 1:15000 and printed on A4 waterproof paper. A way of fixing it to your handlebars is recommended (but not compulsory). Either borrow or buy a “proper” map board or construct your own from a board/stiff card and elastic bands.
A bicycle helmet is compulsory.
3 courses
Short – 4.6km (optimal route 5.2km). All on gravel tracks so suitable for beginners
Medium – 5.8km (optimal route 8.2km). Mix of gravel and harder to ride paths.
Long – 8.2km (optimal route 11.3 – 12.4km). Mix of gravel and harder to ride paths
There are numerous paths in the steeper areas (many unmapped) used by mountain bikers. Use with caution – the courses are planned to avoid these if you wish.
Registration (Kirkhill N car park) 17.30 to 18.30
Starts 18.00 to 19.00. Courses close 20.00
Entry Fees £6 for BMBO members, £8 for day riders and £3 for U21s.
The event is registered with BMBO (British Mountain Bike Orienteering). All riders in BMBO registered events are insured 3rd party. All riders must be members of BMBO (£10 senior, free U21s) or complete a day rider registration form online or at the event.

Safety – A risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. We’ll be sharing parks/streets/woods with others so be courteous to other users and watch out for bikes/dogs/horseriders.
Health – Full leg and torso cover is required in wooded areas due to ticks.

Photography – In line with the policies of British Orienteering, the organisers of this event request that any person wishing to take photos or video showing children should register their details with event volunteers before taking any such photos or videos. The event organisers reserve the right to ask people to refrain from taking photos or video and may, if such warnings are ignored, refer the matter to the police.
